The Rhodium box isn’t large by today’s standards, but it is pretty heavy. The front of the box shows a nice up-close shot of the case fully lit up, with the blue LED glow bar on and the blue fan behind the grill shining through. The case is shown in its black form, although I have the silvery one to test today.
Provided with the box is the usual compliment of case screws and motherboard stand-offs, an Allen key, the manual, two fan plastic mounts, and a generic motherboard blanking plate.
Once out of the box, you can really feel how heavy the case is. While not quite as heavy as an Antec P190 case, it still rates as back breaking. This weight can’t be attributed to the thick brushed aluminium front door, which makes the whole case look like it’s gonna kick your ass. This front has a small and stylish ‘Revoltec’ logo in the bottom right which compliments the silver colour. Next to this you’ll find some triangular slits which allow the light from the LED fan behind to shine through. Running through the centre of this door is a rather flimsy light bar which is easily bent and if you pick this case up wrong you’ll end up with that horrible feeling and a nice sentence made of your finest abuse.
At the top and the bottom of this curved door are shiny silver grills which fill up the space the curve of the door creates. Swinging this door open and you’ll find the second front. There are four 5.25” bays and a couple of floppy drives. At the top of the case inside the door you’ll find the unbelievably recessed reset button next to the large tactile power button and the hard disc LED. At the bottom of the case there is a large fan grill which breaks out of the frame of the rest of the front. It looks a little industrial and I’m not sure whether it works with the rest of the case, but you can just hide it if you don’t like it by closing the door. Annoyingly, this inside front is made of silver plastic, rather than aluminium. It would have felt better if it was metal, but that would have driven up the cost a lot for something that you won’t see a lot of.
The top of the case has the ‘Revoltec’ logo etched into it and has the usual I/O ports behind it. This once again is made of plastic, and this definitely should be made of aluminium instead. When I say usual I/O ports, you get a couple of USB’s, a FireWire, audio in/out and an eSATA port which is definitely nice to see.
The right side panel is simply just sprayed steel, but the left side (the one you have to remove to install your motherboard) has some more interesting design features. There is an indented line running along the bottom, which is punctuated with some slanted grill holes. Above this is a rather over-the-top handle which also has some more ventilation holes.
Once you remove this case side, you’ll find where all the weight is in this case. It’s made of thick steel which adds weight, but it also makes it incredibly strong. Whether an armoured case is necessary is still up for debate, but it’s better than having wafer thin metal that bends if you step on it while installing.
