The 'sink 'n fan

KuForumla VF1 Heatsink

The heatsink uses twin heatpipes to aide in the heat transfer from the core to the fins. Heatpipes are hollowed pipes (Usually copper) that are either filled with a liquid with a high heat conductivity or a fine powder (Again, usually copper). Both these methods are far more effective than using solid copper or aluminium to transfer the heat therefore they are used to provide a pathway for the heat to travel from the core to the large surface area of the heatsink fins. The heatpipes on this 'sink run all the way through the heatsink to spread the heat from the core evenly.

Copper Heatpipes

Heatpipes through fins

The core of the VF1 Plus is made of solid copper but is unfortunately quite poorly lapped. Hopefully this will not influence the temperatures of the testing too much.

Poorly Lapped Core

No Reflection

The fan is built with a coaxial design which means instead of the typical axial fan design with the centre point and the blades protruding from it we have something quite different. The coaxial fan is shaped and works similar to a paddle boat. The "Paddles" or "Blades" are powered round and they scoop the air in one direction and blows it down over the heatsink. It would have perhaps been better had the fan pulled the air from the bottom of the card, over the heatsink, and expelled it out the "top" as this would blow the exhaust air straight out the side of the case (If you have grills there that is).

Coaxial Fan

If you don't like the coaxial fan for whatever reason, Sytrin gives you another option (This is where the "Build your own cooling" comes into play); you can swap it for a normal axial fan. This would be perfect for those that want to run SLI or crossfire as placing a lage 120mm fan on the bracket would at the very least partially cool the second card, and on a small mobo could almost be substituted for a fan on the second card.
